Regina King is mourning the loss of her one and only child.
Ian Alexander Jr., the Oscar-winning actress’s son, committed suicide on Wednesday, the day after his 26th birthday.
“Our family is devastated at the deepest level by the loss of Ian” King said in a statement obtained by ABC News over the weekend.
“He was such a brilliant light who genuinely cared about other people’s happiness.
During this private time, our family requests that you treat us with respect. Thank you very much.”
Alexander Jr. was named after King’s ex-husband, record producer Ian Alexander.
On the 2019 Golden Globes red carpet, King’s son told E! News that he usually attended red carpet events with his mother “She’s simply a fantastic mother.
She doesn’t let hard workdays or anything else ruin the time we have together. It’s fantastic to have a mother with whom I can enjoy spending time.”
Over the weekend, several of King’s co-stars and friends, including Octavia Spencer, Janet Jackson, and others, expressed their condolences on social media.
